A terrifying situation unfolded off the coast of Florida over the weekend when winds from then-Hurricane Debby tore the sail off a boat, paralyzing the vessel in rough seas and prompting a rescue by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Another article about that incident. Owner had "just bought the boat" for $5,000. The owner was on board with a retired merchant marine "who was not used to operating such a vessel", who was at the helm when the boat was disabled.

An Express 34, maybe? I’ll be interested if the sailing mags come out with a more informed account about the connection between oversteering, broken cable, and the main rendered useless. Glad they’re okay. Is scuttling the recommended action in such a case?
