My last several new sails from North and earlier from UK, could not have been "three times" more expensive than any other possible source. I say that because no loft anywhere could have built a dacron sail for 1/3 of what I paid; more like half or 2/3; and that would be without any on-boat measurement and setup.
(Decades ago, for a few years, I was a local rep. for a national sailmaker and always sweated bullets over providing enough measurements and pix to eliminate errors -- or at least errors made by me.) :(

That particular multiplier (2X or 3X) just seems very difficult to believe, to me. I now work with the local loft and stay in touch with 'em, and maybe (no proof, tho) get treated better for both service and price than some other one-shot customers. Not really sure of that, since we only need a new sail every decade or so. (?)

Presently our North jib was just dropped off for minor chafe repairs and checking of stitching. Next will be our main for the same sort of attention. Since neither of these sails are white dacron, but rather a step up in material, there is likely no way to compare them to a sail from a bargain loft. When you factor in personal service and knowledge, comparisons are more difficult.
What do you like for sailcloth, Loren?

Since it's been decades since I could just (pretend to) speak with any authority about Dacron in xx oz weight, and talk about double or triple stitching and how to best reinforce a grommet, nowadays these discussions at the loft kind of range across a comparison of materials, type of layout, and at what point my budget comes to an end! :)
I have what NS calls a paneled layout, and not molded. I know that the cloth in my present sails has been superseded. I would have to find the paperwork, presently at the boat, to say what those light gray panels are made of. You can sort of ID our panels in one of the photos of the evening all the local Olson's were out. https://ericsonyachts.org/ie/threads/four-o-34s-under-sail.19175/
Of the pictured boats, we are the one with #28400, blade jib and full main.
Edit: our main was built with "Norlam" .

Regarding your comments, I had expected the Direct sails to be about 2/3 of Quantum, and I believe Direct (as well as Precision) had sails that were more expensive, but when I mentioned that the imports were much cheaper, the guy from Quantum never got back to me.

I purchased a jib from Precision for my 28-2, and I found the process and the product well-done. I went down to a sail that was about a 110, with a higher clew. I don't race the boat and I found the compromise successful. The boat is easily over-powered and the 110 seems to hit a sweet spot. The higher cut on the foot also makes leisurely solo sailing just a bit more relaxing.

Hi Sid,
I just got an email from the Quantum loft in Bristol. They are offering Black Friday Pricing. They will still be more expensive than the mail order sails, maybe by a long chalk. However, we finished the third year with our new main and 135 jib from them and are very happy with the performance and customer service.
FWIW,
Jeff
