No Origo fuel in So. Cal. for 3-4 months ... what's going on

FWIW, "proof" is an archaic unit of measure for alcohol concentration. However, my new bottle of laboratory ethanol (way too expensive to burn) is labled "190 proof." You'd think chemical supply companies would at least be up to date. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some dumb labeling regulation though "because it's alcohol."

"proof" is also quite different in the US and UK. Something about if you can soak your gunpowder in rum and it still burns, then the rum is OK. Seems like something a sailor might have come up with.

Thanx Mark, for the clarification on your end. I'm refering to the stuff I bought years ago at "Tiffany's (W/M)" and west marine, I remember it being in plastic jugs and almost the color of "Windex". The D/A that I have been using pretty much exclusively since is all "clear" when I dump it in the tank. That was why I referenced the blue and the dye.

We do a bit of baking on the boat primarily treats for the kids and my sweetooth and have never noticed any "flavoring" from the exposed flame in the oven. However I have on occasion burnt something in the oven but that is an issue of mine:0.

The number I posted fro McMaster earlier in this thread is 99% and exceeds the "soot" factor stated in your last post. So it should be fine for use, it mentions for "fuel" and "food grade" in the literature.

Sorry for the misunderstanding about the blue, Dave.

Are you sure you weren't burning holding tank chemicals??? :egrin: With all that formaldehyde, you can cook and preserve at the same time!

Read the label

Well guys, I went to the boat last night to check on the can of Dentured Alchohol or read the label! I am a bit embarrased as to what was on the label. This I bought at OSH 2 weeks ago and it is the same that I have been using for a few years now, since gettin an OSH account. It is a "klean Strip" ~ "S-L-X" ~ Deanatured Alchohol and in the fine print under that it says ~ " Cleans glass, clean burning for marine stoves:0" ~ so I guess it''s really OK:).
Mark, it is 99% pure. I also spoke to a friend who is an actual "rocket scientist" and a motor head like myself. He suggested that the reason for the MEK and acetone is to make the flame more visible for safety.
I will continue using the D/A until I see a reason not to.

Cool. Then I'll try this in a side-by-side comparison with the Soot Free I have left. Wish I had some white enamel pots to test with instead of my dark Calphalon!

We've been using the Kleen Strip SLX product in our Origo "heat pal" for those times the inside of the boat needs a little bit of heating. I haven't noticed any soot in that application. Burns with a bluish flame. I have yet to use it in our unpressurized Origo stove so I can't comment on it's use there.

That said, the price is right and I can pick it up in gallon cans at Home Depot.

Got some, and then some !

We went to Home Depot and picked up two gallons of Kleen Strip SLX for about $16 each. Figured we'd try it to see if we could live with it full time before figuring out a way of getting MEK based stuff brought here by friends.

Of course, once we had those two gallons and stopped by our favorite chandler for some other stuff he brought out "our" 4 gallons of Oligo-recommended Soot-Free. So now we have enough fuel for about 8 months :)

When I told him I was surprised that he finally got some because of the MEK prohibition he agreed, but he didn't realize there was MEK in the formula. Since it came through PortSupply it was either a mistake or there is an exemption because it is for cooking.

It is still all a big mystery but we'll make sure to always have a 6 month supply on board, especially when hitting the Caribbean in a year or two since there is supposed to be NONE available there.

Wow! I know your favorite chandlery, right? Right behind worst?Do they have more? I'll drop by in the morning just in case.Meanwhile, I'm curious to know how the Klean-Strip compares.

Nancy just saw a new supply at WM in San Pedro

Maybe the 500,000 gallon shipment (or whatever it was) finally got released ?

Maybe the MEK restriction doesn't apply to stove fuel ?

Whatever the reason, there suddenly seems to be a supply available after many months of back orders.

Maybe someone (legislature) came to their senses and realized that the use of alcohol stove fuel wasn't responsible for the end of civilization as we know it - seriously, some of these regulations are over the top....

Just tried some Klean-Strip SLX (?) this AM

Since we now have both the Origo recommended fuel and the Klean-Strip kind bought at Home Depot we tried them both this AM. Can't remember what the three-letter name is, something like SLX or SLK or something like that.

When I came back from my shower I noticed a different and somewhat stronger smell coming out of the companionway. It was our morning coffee being perked with Klean-Strip. The smell is a bit more pronounced and less pleasant than the Origo recommended fuel, but at twice the price it might be worth it.

We didn't notice any instant sooting but we'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the update, but I'm a little confused. Are you saying the 2x price of Soot Free is worth it? Or the smell of Klean-Strip is not worth paying 2x to avoid?

I picked up a gallon at Worst, so I have 5 quarts now. I asked the Worst dude if I should hoard, and he said no--they have plenty in their warehouses.

Not sure if we're going to be able to attend the dock party--we might be leaving for Catalina earlier in the day, depending on my fiancé's work schedule.

Mark,

I'm saying it it not obvious if half the cost is made up for by the odor, or not. It isn't that bad.

Going sailing is always a priority so if you have a chance I'd go for it. We can always meet up again over the next month or so while we are in the local waters. If the weather gets crummy, stop by here instead.
