After two month shakedown, back in San Pedro, temporarily.

Actually it has been just 7 weeks, but still a great shakedown.

We had the one jib sheet block disintegrate on us, there was one set screw in the Cape Horn self steering that was not tight enough, one stainless steel railing tube turns out to be inexplicably short by an inch (!?), the 6 screws holding the boom goose-neck needed re-tightening and we have a mystery leak in the v-berth when we are in heavy weather, the ball bearings in the traveler blocks are falling out.

The Cape Horn is wonderful even if the set screw making the top pop up in rough weather was most unsettling. The sails from Lee are great. The solar panels are outstanding, actually producing combined 328 Watts at one point (marketed as 135 each). The water maker makes absolutely delicious water, 1 gallon every 10 minutes, consistently (on a sunny day the solar panels will power the water maker in real time for almost three hours around noon). The Iridium satellite phone with the Axcess point WiFi router keeps us MSFT free and we still get e-mail and GRIB files for about 2 minutes connect time per day ($3/day) absolutely anywhere in the world. The 66 lb plow anchor and HT 5/16" chain hold beautifully. The Maxwell windlass with the low current foot switches (by Lofrans) comes through every time.

So now we are in town to get some parts and provision for the next 4 days or so. After that we head to Avalon for two days and then out west, looking for the Pacific high if it is far enough north. Then swing north.

Not too shabby !! :egrin:

Sounds great! Years ago my step son and rode bicycles across the country. I though our bike were in great shape, but everyday for the first day, something needed to be tweaked. Someone told me later that is normal. It takes a couple of weeks of bumps and torquing before all the loose part show themselves. After that, other than flat tires (34) and chain stretch we had no problems. I check your position everyday, right after checking this forum. Thanks for letting us be a part of your voyage.

Who is the manufacturer of the jib block and traveler blocks that are coming apart? What types of conditions/loads led to these items failing?

I don't know if it was Lewis and Clark who coined the term Hudson expedition (A short expedition up or down the Hudson) but they are invaluable. Go out for real, but not so far that you can't go back and provision or fix what you missed.

I think Senta held up really well considering that she's 35 years old :egrin:

I think they are the original ones on the t-track. UV and other abuse probably broke down the plastic over the years. We did have gale conditions around the time it happened but we were on a mooring at that time so there were no real loads. The winds did whip the lines around so that may have contributed but I think we would have been bothered if they had been beating against the track or something as violent as that. I'm not complaining about them failing :egrin:

Well done

Sven and Nancy,

It is a testament to your forethought and planning. After getting the Captain's tour, I can see why you have had so few issue. Senta is beautiful and you both should be very proud.

Many well wishes and beam winds.
