Assistance with private party boat transfer

Hello all, Apologies in advance if this is not an appropriate to post this. I would like to purchase a sailboat from a friend that has his boat in Mexico on a Temporary Import Permit. It has never been listed for sale through any broker. The boat is USCG documented and is from California. We...

    E35-2 Ericson 35-II Refit 2020-2021 - Part 1

A few years ago just prior to my trip to Kaua’i and back to CA, I spent considerable focus on structure and safety related projects (chainplate replacement, standing rig replacement, etc...). Those were well worth it: I had very few issues in these areas on each passage. It left me with lots...

    Making sails

I'll post about the upgrades in a blog post later. There's a lot to write about and have a midterm exam tomorrow. I will say that Jeff Asbury, former E27 owner, designed the new graphics and lettering for the transom. The graphic in my profile pic is part of that. I was envisioning a table...

    Making sails

It sounds like you were repairing a sail. What did you end up using when the LSZ-1 didn't work? Sewing awl?

    Making sails

For years now, I've been considering making a set of sails: a 90% jib and a main. I've recently upgraded to a new, larger industrial walking foot zig zag sewing machine for other projects, and I have the space and (finally!) time to take on these projects. I just entered talks with Sailrite...

    Soft Spot in Hull

Took a video while underway: It's not quite the localized flexing Hawaii Sailor asked, but thought the video would be of interest. I had just replaced the seacocks with the bronze triangular bases and bronze Ts you see in this video ... big lever arm. I had been watching this area for leaks...

    Flogging itself to death

Late to the party, but apparently I haven't missed anything. I can see the boat flying Dacron shreds off the forestay still. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm paranoid about my sails getting killed like that. I'm down at the dock before and after every major storm.

35-2: Where to Tap Rudder Log for Zerk Fitting (measurement)?

Had the same experience. Once I installed the zerk and filled with grease, no more water ingress.

35-2: Where to Tap Rudder Log for Zerk Fitting (measurement)?

I disassembled the stuffing box and changed the flax on mine a few months ago. There were two sizes of flax in there. One was 1/4", and the other was 3/8" (I think). I still have some of each left on the boat. I'll go check this weekend. Each of them was placed in a channel of the top...

    35-2 Rudder Post Leak

That stuffing box definitely looks like it needs to come apart and have the flax replaced. And, more grease into that zerk fitting. LOTS of grease. I injected enough that it started coming out of the bottom bushing. That fixed the leak from that area on my 35-II. Then I sailed for a...

35-2: Where to Tap Rudder Log for Zerk Fitting (measurement)?

The hole is above the waterline at the dock. That's not true under sail, however, which is why I installed the zerk fitting to begin with - packing with grease has the effect of blocking water ingress when underway. What I don't know is how that top bushing is secured onto the rudder tube...

35-2: Where to Tap Rudder Log for Zerk Fitting (measurement)?

Here's a view of the inside of the rudder tube, viewed from the bottom looking up. That small hole on the right is the hole I drilled for grease injection.

35-2: Where to Tap Rudder Log for Zerk Fitting (measurement)?

Here's an image of where I installed a zerk fitting on my 35-II in 2014. I drilled it first all the way through with a 1/8" (I think) bit, follwed by a 1/2" bit about a half inch through and epoxied the zerk fitting in place. I didn't take a chance, so I hauled the boat out, which offered an...

    Recommendations for laser tachs?

I used this one (iOS). But there were several that looked interesting.
