Just heard the latest update that Starlight II (Ericson 38-200) was lost south of Cuba. The new owner is a distant relative of mine and he was supposedly picked up in a life raft after a few days at sea. He is safe and sound but it sounds like the vessel is missing or gone at this stage. I...
After two days spent on my side, I managed to get the old coupling pressed off using two sets of fine thread 3/8" bolts and nuts. Plenty of bruises and cuts in the process, but finally managed to get it off. Threw it through a friend lathe, primed and painted and she went back together nicely...
Hey! Just wanted to say thanks for the help. Sliding back into the cockpit locker and trying to get calipers onto the stern tube for a reliable measurement was nearly impossible. Anyways ordered the 1- 1/2" PSS... pressed the coupling off and managed to get the new PSS in place. Bilge is dry as...
Has anybody installed a PSS dripless stuffing box an 1974 E32-200? Access to the shaft log is awful at best, and my calipers measure close to 1 5/8" for the shaft log size.
Unfortunately that's directly in between the prescribed PSS sizes of 1-1/2" and 1-3/4"... curious if anybody has ordered...
I saw your write up about plumbing from the bypass a while back, but seeing as my bypass hose is roughly 3/8" hose, I figured there's a good chance I wouldn't get enough heat for a coolant heater/water tank circuit. Do you find yours heats up adequately? I wonder if the bypass circuit may get...
I'm looking to install a bus heater into my 1974 E32-200. It has a Universal M3-20B inside. Has anybody done this before? I'm looking for the correct location to port the engine coolant to the heater.
The coolant pump has no extra ports, other than a hose for the coolant bypass circuit. The...
Your nose!
I used to teach sailing, and would teach students to use their ears and nose. Turn your head. when you feel the wind on one ear, keep turning your head until you feel it on both ears at the same time. Your nose is now pointing at the apparent wind direction! Voila...
Having big...
I've had to tackle a fair number of stuck and corroded fasteners and fittings. The best thing I've found for breaking them loose is a "50/50 mix" of Acetone and Automatic Transmission fluid mixed in a spray bottle. The acetone seems to thin out the ATF and allows it to penetrate deep inside the...
Thanks! This area is pretty unreal for the proximity, whether it be salt water or fresh water with Desolation Sound and the Broughtons at our doorstep. When this whole ordeal blows over, sail on up and I'll point you to some nice spots to explore!
Six hours for a PSS bellows replacement seems reasonable, especially if the access is bad. Although $150 USD/hr is certainly on the steeper side of anything I've seen here in Canada. Planning on upgrading mine this spring and I'm not looking forward to the amount of time i'll be spending jammed...
Just recently purchased a 32-200. Love it so far, she sails like a house on fire (we have the tall rig), but my main complaint is space. I have a universal M3-20B inboard engine and I find access to the basics like engine oil dipstick and stuffing box are a pain and require a significant amount...
