I just received an email from WM. Their annual sale on Lewmar winches is on for 2024.
A few years ago I upsized my OEM Lewmar housetop winches to 40ST models, taking advantage of their sale. After selling my old winches, I came out really really well. :)

I just saw the BOGO announcement and am thinking of finally upgrading my 35 year old Barient primaries. Has anyone done this on an E38-200? The current winches are Barient 32ST. Looking at the specs the Lewmar 65ST is a close match from a diameter perspective so might fit well. But the 65ST seems oversized from a gear and power ratio perspective. I could perhaps go smaller, but then the smaller diameter might leave exposed mounting holes. Ideally, the new winches would mount in the same holes as the old winches, but I'm guessing that would be asking too much. Any insight from someone whose done the upgrade would be helpful.

Cannot help you with that exact upgrade, but if the base sizing is close enough I would sure consider it.
(Remembering that stock winch sizing was and is a compromise between OEM cost and usability by average sailors, in four decades I have Never.... heard anyone return from a windy sailing day and complain that their winches were too powerful and their sails too easy to trim.)
:)
Plan on epoxy-filling the old holes and re-drilling for new holes thru sold glass.

This has a cross reference, hope it helps.

I think I mentioned this last time the West Marine BOGO sale popped up. It still applies. us.binnacle.com always seems to have some awesome deals on winches and furlers. I used the Barrient 27s on the 35-3 for comparison. I purchased a few items including winches and life vests from Binnacle and have had a really good experience with them.

It looks like this cross references takes the approach of matching the diameter, which will give me more power. As noted above, not a bad thing. But it is amazing how the price goes up exponentially.
