1968 Ericson 30 vs 1972 Ericson 29

I have a 1968 Ericson 30 and need to reinstall the rudder. Problem is that all I have is the rudder, ruddershaft and the tiller. no internals. I know of someone who is salvaging a 1972 Ericson 29. Does anyone out there know if the parts from these two models are interchangable? or do you have any other suggestions? Kinda stuck here. Thanx

Sorry

These designs are completely different in approach and construction, so I would doubt you can do much parts from a 29. What "internals" are you referring to? All I can think of is the bearings and stuffing boxes, which should be pretty generic...hmmm?

Bearings and stuffing boxes

Seth thank you so much for responding. Bearings and stuffing boxes sounds about right. I really dont know much about this stuff. You say that they are pretty generic is this something i could call a mobile mechanic on and have them come out and install everything or am i looking at a much more expensive and time consuming project where specialty parts have to be located. I am going to call a local boat yard tomorrow but do you have any clue what is to be expected with a repair like this

There are no bearings, per se, on the Ericson 30 rudder assembly. There are two bushings. One is the tiller assembly piece, at athe top of rudder assembly and installed in your cockpit floor. Unless its been replaced, it would be bronze. The other is a two piece shoe that fits over the sked that supports the top of the rudder. Those pieces would be bronze also. They actually bolt together with bolts running through the fiberglass skeg.

The tiller assembly should be easy to check for. And, if your boat is out of the water, just take a look at the skeg to see if the shoe pieces are there. If your boat is in the water, you're going to have to have it hauled anyway to install the rudder.

Which boat did you end up with? The one with the grey non-skid, black canvas, and nice britework? The one out on the buoy (think it had a navy hull)?

Stuffing Boxes

Boat has a blue hull but i dont think shes anyone your familiar with. shes down on harbor island san diego. Im going to go down there today after work and take a closer look at everything again. shes in the water now so i guess shes going to have to be hauled out. if i am missing any of these pieces are they pretty generic?

The two part shoe at the end of the skeg is definitely not generic. I suspect you would have to find one off of a parted out Ericson 30 (there was one on this board a few months ago) or have one custom made. I don't know about the tiller attachment.

Thanks PDX

I stand corrected-bushings-but serving a similar purpose...The bronze pieces should be obtainable at any decent boat yard, and the rest depends on exactly what bits and pieces are really needed, although it should be easy enough for a good yard to get it together. And BTW 30.0: this is kind of an important part of the boat, and worth spending some bucks on to do it right...would you agree?

Cheers
