A Perspective on Risk

Lots of Alaska fishery documentaries. I guess this is just one more, and it's an hour long, but I couldn't turn away. I have occasionally felt risk was present. But you gotta laugh at the challenges of sailboats....if laugh is the right word.

Anyhow, this one is not exaggerated. If anything, understated.

The mate climbing out on the cod net with the hook was crazy to watch.

High risk - high reward.
They could lose the net or even the boat by doing nothing and possibly perish in those conditions.

Plus, everybody there is after fast big money. Say the Arctic Wind made $500,000 from that one catch of cod. Probably 2/3 would go to the boat and expenses, leaving $20-25,000 per crew member for just that couple of weeks.

Makes me glad I don't earn a living on the sea. Heck, makes me glad I don't work, period.
