Best lakes in GA

After 3 years of living in Chicago my husband and I are moving to Atlanta, along with our 1975 Ericson 27. While I’m thrilled to move to warmer climate, we will miss sailing on Lake Michigan in the summers. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best lakes in northern GA for sailing? It looks like Lake Lanier seems to be quite popular.

I never sailed in GA except on the Atlantic coast, but have many friends who do. Lanier is very popular, which means busy, but not all that big. It does have sailboat-friendly marinas, though. There really are no great sailing lakes in GA for larger boats, but should be OK for a -27. I’m told that SC has better sailing lakes - Hartwell and Keowee, although they can get busy (congested) also. If you don’t mind noise and dodging traffic any of the larger lakes should be OK. Alabama lakes are mostly mud puddles….

Lake Lanier will be your best bet in the Atlanta area. I sailed there once and had a great day, but I believe the summer winds can be light. The lake is large, not Great Lake large, but a nice place to enjoy your E-27 within a short drive from Atlanta. There are a good number of sailboats, so seems like an active community. Although like most lakes, it is power boat dominated, alas.

Many thanks! We’re excited to be in a state where we can enjoy the water more than 4 months a year, even if the winds can be light…
