I heard a rumor about some alternativeto zincs on the shaft underwater.

Something about a box that can be bolted onto the engine.

Anyone hear of this before I haveto dive& replace my zincs?

I think what you are thinking of is a galvanic isolator. I would not say this is a replacement for zincs, but something that provides supplemental protection to boats plugged in to shore power. Here's a link to a device like I am thinking of:
