I am going to change out the cutlass in my 86' 32-3. Does anyone know first off if the shaft will slip by the rudder? Secondly does anyone know the size of the bearing??? Is it universal or are they all different? Thanks for all the help

I have my cutlass bearing out now, waiting for better weather to put back. Rudder has to come out, not too hard, if you have the deep keel it will clear the ground. Bearing is 1 1/4 OD and 4" long. Got to run right now but will get info on where I ordered the bearing.

The biggest chore is getting the flange off of the shaft, I cut it off and bought a new one.

There are several threads on this site about this. I replaced the cutlass bearing on my son's C+C without removing the shaft with a cheap home made rig shown in the last referenced thread. Removing the rudder & shaft is many times the work of building the rig shown.

Thanks...do I need and interior dimension as well. Do you know how big the shaft is? 1" I guess. I am going to try and make the puller that is in the last post. I figure I can build it cheap and its worth a try !

Yesterday it was 65 here on Long Island

So I spent some time at the boat yard and pressed in my new cutless and installed my rebuilt stuffing box with new stuffing box hose.

I used 3/4 threaded rod and four washers two nuts and dish-washing soap as a lubricant. It only took 10 minutes and a good amount of muscle to press it in.

I pulled the rudder and shaft because I assumed that the last time the stuffing box had a new hose was in 1987 when the boat was built!

It was 10 times more intimidating to think about pulling the rudder than it was to pull it. The rudder post will be re-packed now and the stuffing box is and as I said the hose is new. As I said earlier the hardest part was I had to cut the coupling / flange from the shaft and get a new one. This gives me less to worry about as these things can sink the boat.

Here is where I got the 1 x 1-1/4 x 4 cutless and flange and hose, I bought the packing on ebay.

I lubed the heck out of everything!

Just my opinion, but...

As I said, dropping the rudder was not a huge deal, the hardest part was removing the shaft flange. You can tell me I'm wrong but if the cutless is shot then the hose that connects the stuffing box has not been replaced in the same amount of time (probably 25 Years). There is no sea-cock for this hose in case it leaks! Once you get to the back of the engine you can replace this hose, re-pack the stuffing box and since you had to remove the exhaust hose it is easy to remove the heat ex-changer and replace all the hoses back there, not a place you want to spend much time but once it is done you don't need to spend much time back there in the future.

PS: That hose I removed, which I belive to be the original from 1987 was not as thick walled and did not have as many plies as the one I replaced it with from Buck-Algonquin. I had to buy a foot of this hose, only needed 4 inches so I still have 8 inches left and don see that I will ever need it again.
