To me makes total sense for a boat based in Hawaii. My old Soverel 36 on Hilton Head Island also had a small swim platform the original owner (who I sold the boat back to 20 years later) had one for cruising the Caribbean. It was...unorthadox, so I removed and stowed it away. His daughter, who bought the boat while living in the BVI, put it back on. Then, two back-to-back Cat 4/5 hurricanes made sure it never saw the light of day again. Meridian, however, survived mostly intact.
