E 38 through Cape May Canal?

I dont think it can be done but maybe others can comment? Last I checked there was a bridge there with a 55' clearance. I have not measured myself but I seem to recall reading that 55' was the 38's height. Would love to shave a few miles off the trip north but not off the top of my rig...

Pretty sure mine is 50 ft for the mast height off deck, plus distance to water, plus vhf antenna,and/or tricolor. I'd guess that my bridge clearance is between 55 and 60 ft. We went under a 70 once and it looked closer than it was.

Tip it over

Ted,

There was a thread recently about bringing a 35-3 under a bridge....
With an I of 50', plus freeboard, plus antenna, you won't make the 55' without some creativity..

Many folks hang weights on the boom or from the masthead and pass the under the bridge at a sharp heel angle, and I think someone said there are services available where you can pay someone to do the calculation, hang the weights, and escort you under.....
It is worth doing the math..Good luck:egrin:

Im installing an aquasignal tricolor with LED bulbs from DR. LED next week so I think I'll take the tape measure with me aloft and see what I get. Our trip north is nonstop and we are leaving annpolis at night so most likely will hit Cape May in the dark its about 24hrs. I'm not thinking its worth the hasssle of trying to heel the boat and all that. I figure if we can fit comfortably it will shave a few miles if not we'll just go outside. When I do get the actual measurement I'll be sure and post it here. Okay time for a new thread actual fuel consumption for the E-38 with 5432 Universal?

When I brought Wild Blue down from RI, I deliberately avoided the CM canal due to the posted bridge height - - the CM canal route does not save that much time/distance anyway.

Well I was never able to measure the exact height of the masthead over the water on our '89 E38, but I did measure the length of the mast (when it was pulled one winter) as being 48' 9" to the mast boot, and 55' 3" overall. I figure the waterline was 6" to 12" above the mast step, but if you add the length of the antenna and wind instrument, I would suggest 56' over the water is a good guess.

We went around...

...when we brought our '90 38-200, Wings, up from Annapolis to Champlain. I can't remember the calculations exactly but it didn't work.

Sounds like a pretty resounding no go. Thanks for the help. Thinking I agree with Vince that it doesnt cut off that much, but could be a good opportunity to top of fuel before heading offshore for 280 miles...

I have done almost the same as Steve, but with mast installed and the boat in the water, and got around 54 feet and change. I round up to 55 feet.

You can top off your fuel at AC - - just be careful with the large nozzles and high speed fuel pumps there. The AC fuel docks cater to the sport fishing crowd.
