E29 Deck Hardware

Hi all,

I'm new to this board and just purchased a new-to-me 1978 E29. I'd really like to run all of the lines aft to the cockpit, but can't see a simple way of installing the deck hardware with the cabin headliner in my way. Has anyone found another way of installing the hardware without using backing plates since the headline is in the way?

Congratulations on buying the best boat you'll ever own and welcome to the board.

I’ve been contemplating the same project for years and the prevailing method is to drill access holes in the head liner so you can install backing plates and access the nuts. Then put white plastic caps in the holes.

As always, fill the through deck holes with epoxy to avoid any rot if the leaks start.

I'm not saying this is right but in my E32 the previous owner installed the aft-led halyard hardware with screws, not throughbolts, and didn't penetrate the headliner. It's held up for at least 17 years.

Note: your handrails are probably not throughbolted, either.
