Elegance in this case is undeserved.
It might be a simple connection, but the wiring of the stock 3-way Rule switch in the head, and the float switch, and the pump, drove me me nuts and hours of trial and error. Good time for a multimeter, and somebody here can tell both of us how to use it.

From ugly to...less ugly. (The black box on the left is an ancient water level sensor.)
