Wanting to upgrade to self tailing winches but do not know enough to chose a good size. Boat is an Ericson 29 tall rig.

Looking at comparisons from sailboat data, the E-29 has a fore triangle of about 223 sq.ft, and our O-34 is approx 278 sq ft.
We have Lewmar 46ST primaries, which was part of the factory winch upgrade package from the standard Lewmar 43 primaries.
What with the difficulty of cranking our 135 in on a windy day I would not want anything smaller! that the 46.
If you can find a good deal on some 40ST winches, like the annual West Marine BOGO sale in March, I would suggest that.
Note that EY would routinely put on all sorts of winch sizes per customer desire, so sometimes it's hard to guess what the original ratio might have been.
Note B: almost all stock factory winch size ratio packages are "barely enough", to save money on the stock boat advertised price.
