What is a good kind of exhaust pipe wrap?

Try searching the huge on-line catalog at McMaster-Carr, and then maybe just give 'em a call. Asbestos replacement fabrics are certainly available... and perhaps the "aramid fabric" on page 3378 might do the job.

Exhaust Wrap
Try EJ Bartells, they are an industrial supply house. They sell a woven glass tape in various widths that is the same as originaly used on my 1979 E29 exhaust. Works great.
Terminate the wraps with stainless or monel wire. McMaster-Carr a good industrial source with an excellent online catalog.
