Would the wire rope in our rigging fail in a similar manner?

If it's anything like our rig failures, this was probably due to a failure of an end-fitting and not the 3" cable ...

Over the years I have seen in aircraft that the weakest links are the links or connections......not in the vast majority of cases, the wires/cables themselves. Like nquigley said, failures are weighted very heavily in favor of end-fittings.
