YEP, NASTY OUT THERE. HE SHOULD HAVE TURNED EAST. However hindsight is 20 20, and when he had a firm track on the storm, it was too late.

So Sad

Did anyone see the interview the skipper did in August? Very unnerving as he states that they "like to chase Hurricanes" and they "try to see how close to the eye they can get". Check out the Bounty thread on Saling Anarchy

Pretty scary to have someone with this kind of judgement in charge of so many lives.

Moreover, despite the fact that this boat had made a few ocean crossings and many trips up and down the east coast, the boat was designed and built as a MOVIE PROP! I am sure a lifetime of ocean crossings was not part of the design brief. Who knows what condition the structure was in?

Finally, I am told that during the last yard haulout, they removed 80,000 lbs of lead pigs (which were screwed down into the hull over a large area (distributing the load) and replaced it with a 65,000 lb lead shoe on the keel. The reason was to increase freeboard (and hence load carrying ability), while theoretically increasing stability (or least not losing any) due to lower CG. The concern here (and I am not aware of the answer) is whether or not this structural mod was reviewed and approved by a Naval Architect. This shoe created some serious point loading (wheras in the past the load was spread over wide area of the hull) for which the structure may not have been sufficient. Ths is purely conjecture, but I would not be surprised if this steel shoe caused a failure in the hull structure. This is a real tragedy, and I am sure the truth will come out during interviews with survivors and further investigation, but I am suspect of the skipper's decision making and the integrity of the vessel.

Not that I have any opinions.....

The 19% reduction in ballast will reduce displacement unless additional weight of stores are added. However even a 19% reduction in displacement will increase fe=reeboard by a much smaller percentile.
As far as chasinf hurricanes go, that should win him free room and board in a the funny farm, Nice soft furniture and good thick soft wall coverings.
However I would prefer a more substantial vessle for that, such as teh FRAMM.

They never did find the Skipper did they? I guess he's in Davy Jones Funny Farm. :(

Lost at Sea

He swims with the fishes!
But seriously- this is not funny, and we don't have the whole story (just our opinions)............

At least the young women crew member lived to tell about it. Survival suites are never comfortable, but the options are so much worse.

Lost at sea

The good news is there were 14 (approx) survivors. There will be a thorough investigation and we will eventually get the truth...
