What horns do you captains recommend? My dockmaster shrugged at my basic sports stadium air horn. He recommended something more permanent that didn't rely on me getting it out of the compartment or it leaking out its contents.

Here is one answer.

We have kept one of these aboard our boat(s) since the 80's. Works really well, as long as you can draw a deep breath.
I have been told that from a distance it sounds like a bit like a love-sick goose! (Local humor relating to our goose population around the marina.)
Anyhow it's pretty loud and never needs a new canister like the old "air horn" we used to have... which would run out of compressed air at inopportune moments.

I've got the hailer horn as part of the Standard Horizon VHF radio set-up. Bracketed to the underside of the radar antenna. It's really loud and piercing. Unfortunately, they've set it up so that to activate the horn, you have to navigate through about three sub-menus, then press the mic key. Not really accessible in an instant. Although the automatic fog-horn feature is convenient, if you sail in fog. I only have twice that I recall.
Also a canned horn in the cockpit box that's easy to grab. And a whistle. And whistles on the life jackets.
If I ever put an air compressor on board, for inflating the dinghy and water toys, I might put in an air horn as well. With a big red button on the dash board. I'm not sure where it could go that wouldn't be in the way.

I have the same configuration as toddster: Standard Horizon VHF with a hailer on the mast under my radome. I even have the remote mic by the helm. But, he's right that there's no way you could navigate through the menus to blow the horn in a timely way. If I remember on a busy day, I'll set it to horn mode before I leave and return to the dock. This way, the mic switch is the horn button. It's pretty slick. As soon as I'm out of traffic, I'll switch it back to Ch 16. One time, it prevented a collision between two boats. It hasn't saved me - yet.
