I had one of these many years ago on Lake Erie.

It works, more or less. More in the sense that it does give you a reasonable indication of your speed through the water. Less in the sense that the disk you trail behind you on a long stretchy string will foul on any bit of seaweed that you pass through, throwing off the readings. Also, the stretchy string has a tendency to get tangled if you haul it in.

Really isn't worth the trouble. Just use your GPS for SOG and call it a day.
