LED Lighting as part of safety gear

I was talking with an Army friend of mine about the midair collision over the Potomac last month (he flew helicopters) and we got to talking about NVGs and FLIR - apparently LED lights are basically invisible to these devices. LEDs don't emit IR wavelength light. The point he was making is that Coast Guard SAR helicopters often use NVGs for the pilots and use FLIR for detecting surface targets. He said that LED emergency lights (like strobes), while basically invisible to IR devices, are still OK because the non-NVG equipped crew members can see them, but recommended that we also have an incandescent light source on PFD's and rafts, and keep at least one incandescent all-around white light the somewhere on the boat... Good advice.
