I have been "playing" with my Barient 17 winch. It is mounted on the starboard side cabintop. It is used to raise the main as well as to control the mainsheet. The winch has been difficult recently. Sticking, harder to use blah, blah, blah ......so I decided to attempt to service it. When I removed the line lifter I discovered two of the stainless steel shoulder screws were broken off and needed to re removed and replaced. I checked with Miney's but no luck on replacement screws. I e-mailed arco (the down-under folks) but received no reply. I did find Jerry's in Santa Ana (I have no afiliation with them). They removed the two broken screws with a laser and fabricated new shoulder screws. Great guys to work with.
I put the barient 17 back together and although better, is not satisfactory. I am considering a new winch instead of pouring more $ into the 17. I am considering the Lewmar 30 (two speed) and the Harken 12 (two speed). I'm getting older and the extra help would be nice. The price seems to be about the same.
What has the experience with these two companies? Is one better, is one easier to service, will one make me more attractive, taller, smarter......
Thanks in advance for your comments.
