About the only time extra roach is really a pain is in light-air tacks. Getting the main thru to the new side without disturbing the boat (eg, shaking the boom, flicking the backstay) can be a challenge.
Off the wind, and anytime the breeze is up a little, the roach will generally pop thru on its own and be a non-issue.
