ok, so, yesterday i purchased a '78 E25. she's going in the
water tomorrow for the summer- a few questions:

1) through hull fittings? they look good, but how do i
check and be sure?

2) taffrail wheel- want to clean while she's out- best
method?

3) there is a short, thin metal (aluminum?) band screwed
into the hull up near the forward starboard edge of the
centerboard sleeve ('shaft', 'column'... right term?)- slightly
rusted and i can't figure out what it is for, unless.. a
sacrificial zinc that's simply depleted??

thanks all- what a great boat!!

Item 3

Brian, I was under the impression that the centerboard pin on E25s was removable from inside the boat. However, on the E23s it has a flat stainless plate (about 2" long) welded on one end, and screw holes at each end of the plate. The pin is inserted from outside the hull, starboard side, the plate fitting flush against the hull and held in place by the two screws. The other end of the pin is cut off at an angle and matches the angle of the hull on the port side.

I am assuming bronze through hulls? They go redder in colour as they deteriorate, but usually last for a couple of decades at least. Gate valves or sea cocks? If not sea cocks, replace them with sea cocks.

A good project to start with, do it while you are still out of the water. Most of the work is fairly straightforward, but if you have not done it before, you might want to pay someone to mount and seal the new through hulls properly.
