Next step: Does anybody know the name of the wire cage thingy that one installs over the chimney to keep the sheets from fouling on it? And is it purchased or custom fabricated?

Yes, that info would be helpful. I have an unprotected vent on the cabin top too. The vent is between the shrouds and the mast so its probably unnecessary, but you know it would happen during at the worst time, so why not protect it.

It's easy to have a custom guard built by a stainless fabricator such as Railmakers in Costa Mesa, CA. No-brainer for them.

Just design it and make a rough drawing. Use an angle gauge to get the footpads right, or buy stanchion bases first and design to them.

Essentially just a variation of a dorade guard.
