Sailpack or mainsail cover

I don't remember having my particular issue on other boats--the issue being that when the final sail tie is removed before hoisting, the furled sail immediately falls off the boom. Lazy jacks in place all the time while hoisting, sailing and dousing solves that (mine are taut and hardly noticeable).

Apparently this awkwardness is caused by my heavy, slippery Dacron main with full length battens, and maybe by the high stack created by Tides sliders. Quite irritating with no working crew.

The answer is either a lighter, more flexible sail that behaves better on the boom, or a stack pack, which solves it all.

I did have that issue occasionally depending on how well(or lousy) I doused/flaked the sail last. My answer was to leave the aft 1 or 2 sail ties in place, hoist the sail and not pull the last tie(s) until needed. That said I could reach the aft 1/3 of my boom easily from the cockpit. And not having to worry about snagging the jack lines was/is the real blessing.

I just installed lazy jacks on my 25+. The main lines go through bullet blocks on lines run to the ends of the spreaders that are the same length as the spreaders. These pull the lazy jacks apart when the lazy jacks are up, and allow them to be tight to the mast when under sail. I installed pad eyes with clips on either side of the gooseneck for this purpose. I also spliced the two main lines together at the front of the mast, and through another bullet block, so that they can be raised, and lowered with a single line which will apply equal pressure to each side. I leave them up when the boat is docked, so that I don't have to use sail ties (which I believe will shorten the life of the sail by putting creases in the fabric).
