I don't like cutting holes in things that were not engineered for holes

I generally feel the same way. that is why I am not rushing onto anything. But the idea of getting all that cordage out of the sun and wind does have some appeal, and it isn't like it has never been done before. I am just not expert enough to exactly what can of worms it will be opening to try. In theory all it should take is modifying the masthead sheaves and adding a couple of insignificant exit sheaves that are already engineered for that purpose. Then I could use sacrificial lines to retrieve the halyards and pull them all the way into the mast when not in use and bag the excess at the base of the mast, thus adding many years of life to the new lines. at the price of good rope that seems to be worth some consideration. therefore I hope someone has already opened that can and is willing to share whether or not it will be worth the hassle.
