Teflon tape or teflon paste?

When replacing fuel tank fittings is it best to use teflon tape or teflon paste thread sealant, or does it matter? Or is teflon even the right thing to use in this application?

Thread sealant

I won't use the tape as pieces that shed during threading could become an issue in your system. Just for that reason I would use a thread sealant that is rated for your specific fuel. Although the tape will work, they spec PTFE tape for both gasoline and diesel.

Teflon tape or paste, which to use?

Be aware that at least the Teflon tape and probably the paste too, if used for the sending unit plate screws will/might act as an insulator preventing the meter from registering. I used Teflon tape years ago to seal the threads on a temperature sending unit in an A4 only to have the gauge not work. I removed the tape and used pipe dope(?) and it sprang to life.
