weird thought - books *under* the chart table?

I've been searching for "just the right spot" to keep a handful of books. My copy of Chart #1 and the US Regs, as required, plus a copy of Duttons, a couple of maintenance references, etc. Probably a linear foot of shelf-space.

It occurs to me that the structure *under* the nav table on the 32-III might be largely empty. From the centerline, it has two chart tubes that extend outboard, with an opening "bin" underneath.... but there appears to be a bunch of unused volume between the outboard side of the bin (when closed) and the inside face of the hull liner. If it really is unused, I might be tempted to cut a square out of it the aft side of that panel, put some side-partitions, trim out the opening and fasten a batten across face.

It might (?) be a way to have a few books ready-at-hand while at the chart table, without taking up space in the salon and/or putting them in a place where they will jump off a shelf as the boat moves.

Anyone know if there is anything in that space?
