There was a restaurant owner from Bakersfield who was killed when a whale did that while he was fishing.

Back in April, we were sailing eastward of SF Bay's Angel Island when my crew spotted a whale breeching about an 1/8th mile away. Having never sighted a whale in the Bay before, I was skeptical. No sooner did I pull out the binoculars when the beast rose out of the Bay about 150 yards off our starboard side. We estimated it to be a Grey Whale about <> 30 feet in length.

I wondered if the animal was going to play frisbee with my boat when he/she decided to swim further out - blowing saltwater spray into the air. A magnificent and startling sight.:egrin:
