Finding a leaking galley faucet leads to complete removal of sink, faucet and spouts(2) aboard 1986 E32-3.
Jan 28, 2025.
Issue: Upon testing the Sureflo freshwater pump (parts listed below) this afternoon, I noticed water l leaking out of the "cold" freshwater faucet valve. The water quickly pooled along the edge of the galley sink and then continued to drip under the sink itself and onto the ball valves & raw-water intake below in the engine compartment. Argh!
One crewmember had already listed the Whale foot pump spouts as being "loose" in our ongoing "T0-DO / SERVICE / REPAIRS / PROBLEM list.
Choice made...Action: remove complete sink since water is clearly seeping under it's lip and around any existing sealant/caulk; then with easier access...remove faucet and both foot-pump spouts.
Tools: socket driver to remove hose camps from hose sink hose and four corner nuts and washers holding sink to galley countertop; narrow putty knife to cut old caulk and gently lift sides of sink; vice grip and crescent wrench to turn loose underside spout fitting and hold its topside nut; faucet removal tools include Philips screwdrive, crescent wrench and strong fingers to turn loose underside plastic nut turned tight to hold faucet assembly in place.
Black water stained countertop wood existed in some areas around the perimeter of sink. A drying out will be necessary.
Countertop immediately under sink's perimeter edge will call for cleaning.
Choice regarding new faucet (8" center-to-center of existing facet fittings)
Choice regarding new spouts(2).
Choice regarding rebuilding sink waste trap.
Cleaning threads of three existing perimeter threaded shanks will be required (one broke from oxidation/rust damage).
BLOGGER NOTE: I will continue updating blog as progress is made.
SIDE ISSUE: Air bubbles in fresh water lines preventing pump from shutting off.
During summer sailing, crew noticed the fresh water pump actively pumping when all faucets were closed. At first, we thought it was a leak somewhere in the fresh water system, consisting of three fresh water tanks connected by hoses to a manifold found under the galley sink in the E32-3 from 1986. No apparent POs had completed any hose redirection, but it's possible the Sureflo pump replaced the original (date unknown). Also under the sink, two Whale foot pumps are located for pumping both tank water from one (outboard) and raw water from the other (inboard). At the end of the season, fortunately, it was discovered in our new-boat-to-us that by foot pumping the Whale, we could evacuate air bubbles which found their way to the water pump and caused the unnecessary "dry pumping."
