Ericson 38 or 37 in Port Townsend?

I’m talking with the folks at Haven Boatworks in Port Townsend about some work on my boat. They want to take a look at the configuration for a few minutes to make an estimate, but my boat is far away in Blaine.

Is there a chance anyone have a similarly-configured boat in Port Townsend? I’d be beyond grateful if there was any way someone from their shop could see it - it’d save me a lot of trouble!

thanks y’all;

I don't have any info on E38s in Port Townsend, sorry... but I did want to chime in to say the E-37 is a very different boat, so finding one of those probably wouldn't help them make an estimate for your work.

That’s so funny. I know they are in many ways, yet I was on one recently - two, now I think about it - and was struck by how similar many aspects were.

This isn’t to disagree. Just to wonder aloud I suppose. What would you say are the differences? I simultaneously agree and yet I feel it would accomplish what I’m after.

What I want to get eyes on is some of the construction in the head and the forward bulkhead

Huh. I mean there are a bunch of obvious differences: the 37 was designed in the 70s as a racer, with a 50% ballast/displacement ratio and a semi-flush "blister" deck; the 38 was designed in the 80s as a cruiser/raced with a fair bit more creature-comfort designed in. Very different interior layouts. Very different shapes below the waterline. Etc.

But for what you want to get eyes on, I suspect the relevant difference is that the 38 was built around the "tri-axial force grid" (TAFG) which carries all the loads of mast, rigging and keel in a single molded structure. I haven't been aboard a 37 in... hmmm, 40 years, so I might be wrong but I don't think the 37 had the TAFG... if that's correct, I suspect construction details (e.g. bulkhead tabbing) will be pretty different.

You know, I’m thinking I was in something else. Is there a smaller model than the 38 that’s more similar?

Yeah. You could expand your search to include the Ericson 34-2 and Ericson 35-3. Although a little smaller, those are the same 80s vintage and both are built around the TAFG, so even though they may have different interior layouts, they will both have very similar construction details to your Ericson-38.

You might find SailboatData.com useful, as they list each model with year of initial production, and most have interior plan views and hull shape, along with lots of relevant data.

The rigs on all/most of the late-80's BK Ericison's look very similar to me. Of course I know them by their Kenyon rigs, and some had other spars at times.
If you compare my rig to the E-38-200, just a few slips away, except for length of spar they look near-identical at any distance.
