Ordered the rest of the portholes

You'd think with all the money that's going out we'd be getting close to making a dent in the refurb/upgrade list, but the list is still growing ! It's a good thing we have no kids or other hobbies to suck us dry !

Anyway ...

We got the large New Found Metals porthole about a month ago and since it involves very visible gelcoat work we're having it installed rather than doing it ourselves. The picture shows the work midway through. From the outside the fairing-in of the filler is absolutely invisible and the shipright is supposed to do equally good work in the teak interior.

Having seen the quality of the porthole we finally bit the bullet and ordered the remaining 7 portholes to replace the plastic ones. That will leave us with the aluminum non-opening ones and we'll have to see about getting those done too somehow, an identical shape/size replacement in SS would be ideal but we don't have a first-born to offer in trade so it might be out of the question.

It was interesting to read the instructions that came with the large NFM porthole. It specifically mentions using butyl tape (which we will do with the 7) referring to the success customers (Mainsail ?) have had. It also suggests putting a bead of white caulk at the outer rim to contain the butyl. That bead of white sounds like a great idea as it should make the edges white instead of butyl colored so we'll try that unless someone here has an alternative suggestion ? We will be getting the template as Mainsail suggested and did pick up a small router/laminate trimmer about a year ago to make the job easier (thanks to Mainsail).

But first, some sailing this weekend :egrin:

finally figured out some basic ROI with the kids factor. Given the old time=money approach, I've found you can send a kid into spaces we don't bend and fit into any more, and they like it! Here, go pull this wire all the way aft into this tiny little space. What a time (money) saver.....

Just don't let the child labor folks know - it's all in the family after all....

Borrowing is even cheaper

David,

we see the utility of spawn in cases like that. However, we've found that you can borrow them from siblings and you only have to feed them during the loan. It is kind of like JIT small workers.

Of course, once your siblings stop producing it is only a matter of time before the workers get to large to fit or put up with your demands :-(
