Prop shaft tube size

One of the things I'm doing when the boat gets hauled this spring is to put in a shaft seal. It's on the Christmas wish list. The current stuffing box is ancient. I can't get a good measurement of the tube size as the stuffing box tube is shoved up tight against the back of the tube. I am more than very nervous about loosening the clamps on a 27 year old hose and pushing it forward enough to get an accurate measurement while the boat is in the water. The measurement I seem to get is 1 3/4".

Have any of you E-34-2 or 35-3 types replaced the stuffing box? Do you have the shaft tube size?

I suggest you go to the Buck Algonquin web site. They have a lot of info there about relative sizes of components if you know the propshaft.diameter.

It looks like 1 1/2" hose for a 1" shaft. Or maybe not. They have multiple sizes listed, so you could be right about 1 3/4".

Thanks Keith. For a 1" shaft, the tube diameter can be 1 1/2", 1 3/4", or 2". The Ericson manual doesn't specify. Measuring the hose and subtracting 1/4" for each wall gives me 1 3/4". That's a loosy goosy method that I'd like to improve on before ordering. I don't want to have to exchange it after the boat is hauled.

Bob, I just measured the old stuffing box-and-hose that I pulled out of our boat when the PSS shaft seal was installed. The ID of that very-heavy-duty hose seems to be 1 5/8" or maybe a tiny bit more. I would say that it is 1 5/8" if I had to pick a number.
It was only in use from 1988 to 1995, and if you want it you can have it. It's 3 3/4" long.

(It is still in my spare boat supplies and "stuff" cupboard, since 1995, because no one bought it at the last swap meet I attended!)

Given that our boat was built in the fall of '88, it might be the same as other similar Ericson boats of the era. (?)

Tube.

I have it! Herb Friedman (E-34 S.F. Bay) E-mailed me a copy of the yard bill for a shaft replacement that the Previous Owner had done. The shaft had been bent in an encounter with a crab pot (the boaters curse of the world). When the new shaft was installed. It was a PSS 1" X 1 1/2". Thanks Herb and what a great site!

Shaft Seal

Thanks for the offer. One of the objectives of doing this is to get rid if the shaft dribble and the associated maintenance. I have the starting battery right next to the shaft log and the assessability is not nearly as good as that "Swedish" Ericson of yours so I want to do this once and once only. I have a feeling that the boat has a bent shaft so this is the perfect time. I am also adding a Vetus Bullflex so the shaft will have to be shortened. It is already a couple of inches too long (prop sticks back several inches from the strut).

Looking at the rusted mess of a coupler, this job is going to be fun. I've already started to soak it in penetrating oil.

Now that I am going to stop the shaft dribble, the mast boot has started leaking. Oh well, at least it's fresh water!

Stern Tube repair/replacement

Does anybody have any experience securing the brass stern tube to the fiberglass portion of the tube that the prop shaft runs through??
I just pulled my shaft out; because it was rubbing on the fiberglass portion. The stuffing box needs to be replaced, but the brass stern tube fell away from the boat when I pulled the shaft; I have been told that is not good, and needs to be secured to the fiberglass tube. I think I am capable of doing it, but sure would like some advice. Also, I think the brass stern tube is OK, but does anybody know where to get one, if I need to do so?
