    Shower sump pump

Did you ever figure out where the yellow wires come from and go to? I have a Jabsco "waterpuppy" (vane pump) installed in the engine compartment as the shower-sump pump. I had recently replaced it (2 seasons ago) but it has now stopped working. At the boat today I took out the impeller and...

    How far is too far?

My Maine (Camden) mooring is 4 hours away. My "local" Beverly, MA mooring and YC is 1 hour (not rush hour) or 2 hours (rush hour) away. Both are North of us. Boat is about 1/2 time at each. There is nothing (IMHO) that compares to Maine sailing, at least on the East Coast. We usually stay 1...

    Are you a cranky sailor?

Those were the exact and only words of my first reluctant passenger. On the college sailing team we shared the Charles river (Boston) with all the other college's rowing teams. In a dinghy as skipper I'm paying super close attention to the race competition when my dinghy just stopped and my...

2.3 HP gas-powered Honda or electric for inflatable tender?

Gumming up your carb is not really an ethanol issue. Its a bad gas issue. Gasoline is highly reactive and volatile and that's what makes it a great fuel, but it also means it is decomposing rapidly as soon as its made. For cars this isn't a problem since you replace the gas constantly. For...

E35/3 Chart plotters at the helm?

I thought of going the tablet route but decided to go full MFD for the following - Integration of auto-pilot, radar, compass.. its nice to have the radar display overlaid on the map and with the compass/gyro unit integrated as well the boat direction on the display updates quickly and I can...

E35/3 Chart plotters at the helm?

I got a Raymarine and mounted it in a swivel (double-ball-mount) enclosure. It is super handy to be able to turn the unit sideways when I am steering from the other side of the wheel. Also doubles as a dinner light.

Propane tanks to fit molded lockers in cockpit

10lb Worthington Aluminum fits just right on 35-3 (same locker I think). They are hard to find! I got one and waited all season to get a spare by checking stock here and there. Of course I was used to CNG where one tank might last a season... I am *still* using the first fill of my first tank...

Visiting San Fran / Redwood City. Any Ericson owners need crew for a sail next week 3/20-3/24

Bouyed by the success of kib67pgh's Tamp visit post: as the title said, I'll be in the San Francisco / Redwood City area next week and would love to meet any Ericson folks out there even if its just an excuse to bum around a dock. Sailing would be great too, and if there are any after-work race...

    Thru hull Transducer Question

I'd vote no new holes. Hard enough to maintain the existing ones. Even if the new transducer isn't the right size. If its too small, you can get a larger diameter transducer which till be cheaper than filling the old hole properly at least time wise. If it is too big you can drill out the...

    Panel lights

The panel incandescents using 2162 bulbs are 1.4 W, so each panel indicator takes about 0.1 A (100ma). Each LED cabin light is 1/2 W so takes about 0.036 A (36 ma), so 3 LED cabin lights on takes the same current as just 1 panel light. My anchor light is LED also. With the solar panel I am...

Weather helm / helm balance question

As your main bags-out the center of effort moves back which increases weather helm. It also becomes impossible to de-power with outhaul and twist because there's still too much raw curvature in the cloth. When your main is carrying a bubble up front, all of the pressure is on the back half of...

    Solar Panel Sailing Lifestyle Choices

I added a 100W flexible panel on top of the dodger. It was a fantastic upgrade. Battery is always 100%. I don't have refrigeration (yet) so 100W is fine for current needs. You would want more like 200W to keep a fridge running, but you also need full Sun to really get the power. My...

    Panel lights

Yikes: 12 bucks a light? My panel would be the most valuable part of the boat :) I plan on replacing all the incandescents on my DC panel with LEDs this spring. The plan is to color code them red / yellow / where reds are the ones I never want to leave on (bilge pump, propane solenoid, etc.)...
