Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

Oh there was definitely moisture in the core around the chainplates (and many/most of the other deck penetrations). I used a rotary tool to cut the fiberglass and I recall well the port aft lower shroud spraying water all over me as I cut through the fiberglass into the core (that was the worst...

    Outhaul/Reefing help

Nope, no cleat there unfortunately. Looks like the answer in general is that additional hardware will be needed. I’m just curious how the previous owner (40 yrs) tensioned the foot of the sail… Also not a great photo, but attached is a photo showing the topping lift setup (and the lonely bronze...

    Outhaul/Reefing help

Thanks all. The reefing setup is clear, thanks for pointing that out. Even came across this diagram which shows how it should work. I’m still not sure about the outhaul though. The only hardware that was left on the boom was a single shackle at the boom end: no lines, blocks, sheaves, or...

    Outhaul/Reefing help

New sailor here and I’m trying to figure out the rigging setup for the outhaul (or what I believe is the outhaul?) on my 1971 E-27. Although I have a couple hundred photos after going through the process of replacing the standing rigging and rebedding all the thru deck hardware, somehow I don’t...

Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

Closing the loop on this thread in case anyone finds something worthwhile down the road. We hauled out and cleaned/repainted the bottom of the boat and, as folks suggested here, it’s a dramatic change in how the boat handles under motor: faster on the glide, more responsive turns, and...

Boomkicker on E-27 with rolling boom?

As I'm replacing all the standing rigging, I'm looking at other changes I might make. One of those potential changes is to remove the topping lift and replace it with a Boomkicker (or rigid vang?)—and also add a vang sheet setup (currently has none). On the current boom, the pin freely rotates...

Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

That well sums up my intent: make the boat reliable and safe, and otherwise just enjoy the sailing. The tricky part just seems to be different interpretations of what is deemed "safe". I'll be taking a closer look at the chainplates tomorrow and hopefully things look okay enough that I can skip...

Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

Thanks for sharing your opinion, really appreciated. I have read enough to realize that this is somewhat all or nothing: visual inspection, in so much as it's possible, is only minimally helpful. So one just has to make a judgement call whether to make the sizeable investment to undertake...

Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

I hope so eventually, but I’ve got chainplate inspection on the mind amongst a long list of tasks… Unfortunately this boat was neglected somewhat for the past many years. But at least one task is mostly taken care of!

Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

Thanks for sharing your experiences, much appreciated. I was happy to have even found one of these motors in stock as it checked all my boxes, so the slow speed was pretty disappointing. But very heartened to hear we can expect better speed (and likely at a lower throttle).

Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

Thanks all, glad to hear it. All the more reason to get it out of the water as soon as possible.

Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

That's what I'm really hoping is the case. Knocked some of the barnacles off the rudder while at the dock, but will do a proper cleaning + inspection + painting during haul out in April. I know the boat hasn't left the water for at least a decade, and likely twice that or more...

Top motoring speed with E-27 and outboard?

We're in the early stages of restoring new life into our recently acquired 1971 E-27 with transom cutout. First order of business was replacing the relic outboard with a new Tohatsu 9.9 with ultralong shaft and 4-blade prop. We still need to haul out and clean/inspect the hull, and I know there...
