Steering pedestal replacement
Hi Dave,
We need a little more information. Are you posting your project? Do you have questions about how to do it?
Also, it would help folks respond more usefully if you add your model number, year, and engine details to your signature. Click on your avatar/name in the blue bar up above; go to 'signature' on the left side. If you're who I think you are, it's a 35-3. :)
Cheers,
Jeff

As Jeff points out, paraphrasing....
a thread title with no content will attract nothing but puzzled glances.
Did you click on the "post" icon clicked too soon?
And yes, please fill in your Sig Line.
Thank you.

Hi folks. The Meriman steering pedestal
On my boat has deteriorated and needs to be taken out

Pictures help. What's the problem with the existing pedestal? If it is a corroded base, there are workarounds.

Most of our boats rigged originally with Yacht Specialties/Merriman steering units still function pretty well. Parts however have to be second hand, as Ys/Merriman is long out of business. Edson parts are usually not compatible.

Changing the whole system to Edson will be expensive. There may be repair options.

Here is a photo guide to such pedestals, with links to Edson.

If you decide to go the repair route, reach out to Anchors and Oars/Sailboat Parts in Grasonville, MD. I've had him ship me several parts to Kansas. Tell him what you're looking for and if he doesn't have it currently, he can keep an eye out from future boats he salvages.

I just received a Merman/Yacht Specialties Pedestal from Anchors and Oars. It's an exact match, the cost was incredibly inexpensive. Anchors and Oars was very responsive as we worked through measurements and options. Our existing pedestal in corroding at the base at all the two of the bolt holes - the damage most likely hidden by paint and bondo prior to the PO taking possession. Happy to have the replacement but not looking forward to the installation. Give Anchors and Oars a try.

I'll bet you'll enjoy the installation, especially if the replacement is an exact match. Getting the old one apart is only a problem if the big stainless machine screws into the aluminum on top are frozen, and you might not even need to bother with those. Do note whether your cable wires are currently crossed, so you can put them back correctly, not like I did. You've probably already seen pedestal disassembly and pedestal rebuild.
