Hi,
Having a new business that needs all of my time I made the decision to offer Tribute to a new owner. This boat belongs out there, not at the dock.

I owned her for 4 years, she does great in light wind with her fin keel. If there is no wind, her Yanmar engine takes care of it, and with about 3300 hours, there is plenty of life left.

Newish (2022)
Inside:
Espar heat, refrigeration, hot water tank, and propane sniffer
Outside:
new lifelines, dodger, and wheel cover.

The bilge is dry. The engine starts right up and purrs nicely, with no oil leak or any other problem. Oil and filter change every year.

I was planning on hulling out next fall for bottom paint. Diver John just cleaned the hull said everything looks good, removed some hard growth from max prop shaft, strut, rudder hinge, bottom of keel and other areas. Zincs are at 70%, max prop zinc at 80%, 3-3/4 inch strut zinc at 85%. Bottom still in pretty good condition.

Sails are (1) main, (3) head sails and (2) spinnakers (gennaker).

As for the asking price, I am thinking around 58k would be fair, negotiable some with the right buyer.

Cheers and Happy Sailing

Nice looking boat! but it will probably be a tough sell at that price in this current boat market/economy. There are a number of really nice late-model E-38-200s that have been for sale for 6+ months already--albeit priced about 10K or more less. Some are very nicely equipped as well.

If we didn't already have our new to us 35-3, and bigger if, difficult availability of slips in our area, we would be very interested. Nice looking boat, good luck.

Similar situation for us, sort of. For the price and apparent condition of this 38, we would like it a lot.
Alas, we are about a decade late for such a move. :esad:
However we still like our Olson very much. :egrin:

If the boat is in your area and you want a 38, that is a bargain price.
Sounds like it needs a haul out and bottom paint plus whatever running rigging service, also standing rigging is an unknown. No windlass. Seller said he wouldn't trust the standing rigging in "big wind." Would that price still be a bargain? Unknown what other systems are in need of replacement. Can a diver inspect the shaft and that whole assembly if the boat is underwater? Bottom.paint photos are from 2020 when "hull was shaved off and fiberglass layered with epoxy to remove "cosmetic blisters"
Your thoughts?

Where is she located? East coast?

The "10k or more less" is in line with our purchase price in 2020. For reference we paid ~$5,700 for full standing rig replacement in 2021.
The epoxy bottom job is a nice bonus. If the boat was recently dove, inspected, and cleaned, I wouldn't worry too much about the external shaft/prop assembly. The stuffing box etc you can inspect from inside.
A professional survey will reveal worries and give reassurance.

Who is "driftless" I was referring to a 38-200 for sale in Washington. The sellers screen name isn't driftless. And I have been DMing with the Washington seller who did not do a complete standing rigging in 2021, but told me directly his rigging would be "ok around here" but he wouldn't go out in big wind with it. If you follow the thread, you would see you're not replying to the original sequence, screen name maubin5. That isn't you, correct?

That seems like a careful non-answer to me. Nonetheless if buying a used sailboat with no written proof of a new standing rig within the last ten years (and a survey that verified that information) I would just factor a new rig into my budget. i.e. The initial purchase outlay would "include" those $$, and just allow for that in any offer. (Make and model of boat not being the determining factor.)

I have done a delivery in an E-38-200, and really like the design, so I do admit to some bias! :)

I have been DMing with the Washington seller

"Maubin5" is

Marc & Amos
Tribute, 1990 E38-200
Bainbridge Island, WA

Is that the same seller? Maubin5 haven't posted here since April 2025.

Also, I could no longer call $58K a bargain price. The yacht sales business is now much depressed.

Clicking on the site name shows that the OP last checked in here last Saturday at 9 am-- although I have no idea why they have not weighed in on the discussion. There are, as someone once wrote, a "million stories in the naked city" ...

It's the same seller, I contacted him directly and received further information, as recently as last week. I'm really looking for something more turnkey, and depressed or not, I'm finding sellers are asking ridiculous prices for what they say are turnkey boats that are 20+ years old. Whether they have a book of documentation of all refits have been addressed is another matter. Also I found out another interesting tidbit to factor into a sale price, effective Jan 1 2028, copper based bottom paint will no longer be legal. Anything less fouling resistant will not last as long, and also wondering if existing boat owners with copper based bottom paint will be subject to revision? I need to read the bill in more depth. So there's that.

Sorry @Barbixy - obviously my comment was unclear.
I was trying to provide some reference information for what you might expect to pay to replace the standing rigging on a 38-200 and to chime in on purchase price.

Thank you driftless :) I think the location of the boat, private seller or broker, and overall condition would really affect cost, prob with a big variance. I appreciate your help in offering information in any case, I will go back and read your comment again with a new set of eyes. Looking at boats feels like navigating a minefield sometimes. LOL !!
