I just got back from a delivery on a lovely Jason 35, and the ancient AutoHelm 2000 tiller pilot drive motor failed about half way down the Washington coast. With three of us to take alternating one hour helm watches it worked out OK. On the plus side we had the full moon, Venus, and a host of stars to steer by at night.
We did (re)discover just how much we all take autopilots for granted on our individual boats, though.
If anyone has an one of these laying around in that back of their "boat surplus cupboard" and wants to sell it... preferably cheap...
please let me know.
The owner of the Jason does a lot of single-handing and now plans to upgrade to a modern higher-torque tiller pilot over this winter, but it would be nice to have the old system working for the fall cruising season.
Regards,
Loren
