Always a good idea. Don't use zinc however. Magnesium or aluminum is appropriate. I use magnesium and seems to work well.

As far as the heat exchanger goes, the only pencil anode available is zinc, if you use it no harm, it won't be much help for long though. I just break the zinc off and use the plug alone, better that the zinc breaking off inside the heat exchanger.

I tend to swap mine out every other year. Not sure if that’s right, but it’s what I do.
