Real Good writeup. Kind of reminds me of the local effort to bring the carrier Ranger to Portland, about 10 years ago. There just was not enough money and support to make it happen, so the old ship was scrapped. Sad, but we cannot preserve all of the past.

Sad indeed. However there is only--and has only ever been--one SS United States. To me she's more significant than a lot of naval vessels because of that factor--not to mention her objective and worldwide greatness, prestige and beauty as a liner.

I have had the good fortune to view the USS Intrepid (Essex class), USS Alabama (South Dakota class battleship), USS North Carolina (NC class battleship), and USS Wisconsin (Iowa class battleship) and they are all wondrous vessels indeed. Yet there is something so graceful and peaceful about the Big U that just is lost on such vessels of war, which I love and value for different reasons (sheer power perhaps). Maybe I'm just crazy for loving all these old boats. :egrin:
