E38 owners, where do you store your emergency tiller?

Hi Folks!

While rummaging around my v-berth storage area it occurred to me that this is probably not the best place to store the emergency tiller. If needed it would take a while to retrieve it under the cushions not to mention the time it takes to insecure it and head back to the helm. I’m not sure it would fit in the aft lazarette and my starboard lazarette has other gear. Just curious about the consensus of this issue.

Thanks!

I don't know how different the cockpit locker layout is from your 381 to my 38-200. Our starboard locker has a shelf up under the coming that holds long objects/poles quite handily, the emergency tiller included. It's snapped into some chocks on the shelf. Sometimes it gets a little buried, but it's still always in the same place and easy enough to get to should the need ever arise.

The 381 has a stringer at the aft starboard quarter. My emergency steering gear sits on that, without any tie-downs (kept in place by drain hoses).

I keep my emergency tiller on the shelf in the quarter birth. Very easy to get to and it doesn't roll around.

Thanks for the replies guys! These are all good options, bottom line I need to get out of the V-berth storage area! I’ll put it on the to-do list.
