Engine noise

We have an 76 E27 w/Volvo diesel engine. At a low rpm in gear the engine makes a high pitch hum. Once taken out of gear the noise goes away.
Any suggestions?

Try...

Check gear oil level in the transmission case. Check the volvo manual for specifications. The lubrication of the transmission gears is cyntrifical (spell check). At low engine rpm and a low level condition in the case, the gears may not be picking up enough oil.
