epoxy bottoms

I've been looking at E-35-2s. Some have had epoxy bottom jobs, and some have not. My question is really pretty simple: How long does an epoxy bottom job last? Is it something that will have to be re-done every 5 or 10 years, or is it a more-or-less permanent solution to the blistering problem?

In other words, if I see a boat with a 5 or a 10 year old epoxy bottom, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Any ideas, hints, or guidelines would be much appreciated!

Good question and there is no definitive answer. I suppose
the most important factor would be if the the hull was
properly prepared before barrier coating. The laminate must
be dry and any blisters addressed. If proper prep is not done,
then you are effectively sealing in moisture and further
problems will most likely result. Also, maintaining the epoxy
is important. The Gougeon Bros. recommends additional
coats if the epoxy is abraded through sanding the bottom,
or damaged in any way. A properly applied and maintained
epoxy barrier coat should last the lifetime of the hull.
