January Walkaround

Jim Picerno

1989 38-200
My recently purchased Ericson is located in a different state, and on the hard til spring. I decided to fly up to the boat and do some additional inspections, as well as make a video to document my progress. This is my first attempt at creating a video so it's a bit rough, and hopefully technical difficulties won't prevent you folks can seeing it. We'll see if this is my singular attempt at video production. Any comments on the topics below would be appreciated.

1. Primer coat or paint over the current paint.
2. A recommendation for fairing compound/resin to patch the hull and rudder.
3. Does the alternator bracket need replacing?
4. Is the propane locker workable?
Thanks.

Hi Jim,

1. I wouldn't put primer over old ablative paint. The areas that are back to bare hull could use some, IMO. There are strong opinions on the value of barrier coat, fer it and agin it.
Just three of many discussions around this:

Some anti-fouling paints can go over other formulas and some can only go on like paint. A knowledgeable dealer should be able to help you with one that will work for your mystery paint.

2. My understanding is that the rudders were white for when the boat is stored out of the water. The theory is that it reflects light and keeps the rudder innards from heating, expanding, and disintegrating. Ours was white when we bought it. We've kept it that way. And it seems solid, FWIW At least in some Ericson manuals it states the rudder warranty would be void if it were painted another color besides white.
I've had really good luck with Total Boat fairing compound. It adheres well and sands out easily. I use their barrier coat too.

4. This thread has a number of people sharing of their experiences.
Those lockers were designed for LPG and most people are comfortable making the switch. We did. The tub is solid and airtight from the lip down if the hose is in good shape and clear. There is some question about just how airtight the lid needs to be. The subject is discussed in several posts to the thread.

Cheers,
Jeff

!. Determine what type of paint is currently on there (ablative or hard). Sand off loose paint and repaint with similar, Don't put primer over old paint.

2. 3M premium marine filler or thickened epoxy.

3. Alternator bracket looks ok and appears to not be anchored to the front housing of the engine.

4. Propane locker is viable as long as the drain hose is functional and connected to a thru hull in the the transom. Propane is heaver than air and will flow out if there is a leak at the tank. I have the same set up on my 34-2. Boat is currently CNG which I like for the safety factor and I can still get refills.
These boats were all built with propane lockers and at the time could either be ordered with CNG or propane.

Looks like She was well cared for Enjoy!

if you are inclined to mix your own, I like west systems 410 ultra light fairing compound, it sands beautifully
