I just looked at the Holliday Marina web site. Are you paying $462. a month for a slip? It sounds like a really nice place to keep a boat, but the rent... is equally impressive. We are spoiled here it seems, and being in a YC marina I pay a lot less than I would in a commercial marina, also. I wonder if your area has some yacht clubs to choose from?

About a half gallon per hour has been a useful estimate for us with our 3 cylinder 21 hp Universal.
May I suggest bringing an extra fuel filter and familiarizing yourself with how to change it? If a boat hasn't been used much, a long trip that gets bouncy can stir up sediment in a tank which clogs the filter. FWIW

I'm at this same marina. It is really nice. However, it is "reasonably" priced, by Southern California standards. There are only a few marinas nearby that are cheaper, and there's a reason for that (e.g., next to the container yards where security is--shall we say--dicey). It's nothing like the way it works up in your neck of the woods, Loren.

Then again, I can jump on my boat and go sailing right now, or next week, or next month....Winterizing our engines? Pfffft!

Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club is nearby. It's a good racing club, of which I was a member back in the 1980s when I was racing Cal 20's. These days it is fairly pricey. By the time you pay for the club membership and dues you are not really going to be saving anything. If you were going to be in the club anyway it would make sense because I think you do get some discount on the slips that the club manages--assuming any are available. But joining the club in search of cheaper slip rent is not a thing because otherwise everyone would be trying to join it for that reason alone. And they aren't.

With my M18 at 3000 rpm and the 2 bladed prop I got 2 hrs per US gallon. With the 3 bladed prop I am getting about 1.8 hrs per gallon. Thus with a 20 US gallon tank (aluminum by the way) I could get 36-40 hrs, but as Loren said above in any sea state at all I would likely draw air well before I ran it all down so I limit myself to not less than 1/4 tank.
The aft berth on Second Star has 3 plywood "plates" to access the after areas. The fuel tank is under the aftermost one and was not screwed down, nor did it show evidence of ever being screwed down. I created a 2 inch hole in the plate above the fuel shut-off valve on the tank to make it easier to get to in a hurry, but I have never switched it off. I also made another inspection port (hole) in the engine cover plate to check the shaft seal for leaking, again to keep things easy. I use this one alot.

Thank you for these tips. Luckily we made it without any problems. I will get an extra fuel filter and learn how to replace it. Thanks again.

Holiday is a very nice marina but I've moved her to a marina (not quite as nice) in Marina Del Rey but it's 15 miles closer to me and I pay about the same. I'm told the yacht club at Holiday was excellent and not to expensive. Too bad for me. I'm sorry, but I don't know what a "YC" marina is.

Oops. Unneeded acronym. Just a shorthand way to identify a private marina owned/operated by a yacht club. There are several of these in my immediate sailing area. I am a member of the least-expensive one where work hours are required and we have zero paid employees.
The marina and floating clubhouse were all built by members, over the decades. Us members paid it off over several decades and nowadays do own the upland property and thus the riparian rights.

FWIW, Holiday does not run a yacht club. There is a really small racing club that occupies a tiny corner of the same building out of which the marina office operates, but they are distinct from and unrelated to Holiday Harbor. Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club (CBYC) is a much bigger, mostly racing-oriented club just across the channel from Holiday that has a really nice facility and manages a number of slips that they lease to interested members.

Mr. Williams! What a honor to have you reply!! I'm a huge fan, subscribe to your YouTube page and share your videos! Your are a remarkable man! I've had so many "unexpected" expenses associated with the purchase of the boat that I'm very partial to "quote less" scenarios at the moment. Thanks for the tip(s).

King Harbor Marine Center is not a bad yard--at least in my past experience with them. I haven't been there in several years, though. The last time I used them they still allowed owners to do some of their own work. If this yard is also doing work then they will not charge you for lay days during the period they are still working. So, what I have done in the past is have them do the bottom painting while I have tended to other matters that I preferred to do myself (e.g., some glass work).
