I installed some stainless steel locker latches after we got KOKOMO last year. We like these because they are flush, self latching, and have a primitive key lock for a little security. The starboard cockpit locker had a hasp but the lazerette lids previously didn't have anything.
The Ericsons and other vintage boats for sale I've looked at have plently of cockpit storage, but securing the lids is often ignored. In a knockdown that can lead to the loss of the vessel in the worst case. In the least it could be a messy clean up. Several years ago a brand new fair sized (40 foot ?) boat on it's way to a boat show was lost in a storm off of New England becasue the cockpit lockers flooded without latching lids.
If anyone is interested the stainless latches cost about $50 at West Marine. On the starboard locker I had to make a custom backing ring out of PVC pipe.
