The deck in that part of the boat was not designed for that kind of load, I am not sure how it would hold out on a thirty year old boat without redoing the core; at the very least it would need extensive backing, which would be difficult due to the curve in the deck.
Also, I think a traveller forward of the hatch would be very hard to manage under sail.
My overall thought: if you want a boat with a large open cockpit for lazy days on the water, there are plenty of good designs for floating junk out there. If you want a boat to sail in circles around those boats (literally, on light wind days, it is great fun around $quarter million boats), buy the Ericson, but be willing to tolerate the small sacrifices to comfort that you find on a true sailor's boat.
Just my thought, mind.
